Man charged with manslaughter in death of girlfriend

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) -- A man accused of assaulting his girlfriend who later died has been formally charged with reckless manslaughter and 2nd-degree assault.

Investigators said Oscar Rodriguez had a history of domestic violence with Morgan Dumas. In September, police were called to their house and Morgan was arrested.

Last month, she was found unresponsive in a home on Hall Avenue in Grand Junction last month and later died. Rodriguez was arrested in the case.

District Attorney Dan Rubinstein said his office did not file murder charges because they do not have sufficient evidence to show that Rodriguez knowingly caused her death.

"After consultation with the doctors and the coroner, we do not have sufficient evidence to show that death was a certain enough result of that conduct to ethically be able to file that charge," Rubinstein said.

Rodriguez is being held on $1,000,000 bond.
