GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO News )-- Thursday night, some of Mesa County's youngest people got a history lesson on one of America's most influential leaders.

Neighborhood Read at the Mesa County Library centered the night on Martin Luther King Jr., in honor of his upcoming birthday. Kids got a chance to hear Dr. King's famous speeches, including 'I have a dream'. Kids also got to learn the importance of his work and what he did for civil and human rights.

"[We need to] let them know about Martin Luther King and why we do what we do and why we celebrate Martin Luther King, who had such an impact on our lives," says Janielle Westermire with Neighborhood Read.

All next week, celebrations for Dr. King will be happening including the following:

Jan 18: MLK Movie Day @ Avalon Theater
