Nonprofit builds home for Montrose veteran

MONTROSE, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- A veteran will be getting a new home in Montrose soon, thanks to a non-profit and the community.

In 2008, Army Specialist Steven Baskis was deployed in Iraq when a bomb was detonated next to his infantry vehicle. He lost all his vision, had nerve damage to his left arm and sustained a traumatic brain injury.

Homes for Our Troops, a nonprofit organization, built a home for him in Montrose.

His new home is completely adapted--including zero threshold doorways and shower, and phone-activated temperature controls.

Saturday, the community helped to landscape his house. Steven will receive his home at a ceremony on September 22.
