UPDATE: Man identified in Sunday's fatal officer involved shooting

The Mesa County Coroner has identified Eugene Baylis, 67, of Grand Junction, as the man killed in the shooting Sunday involving a BLM officer.

The coroner said the cause of death is multiple gunshot wounds.

One person was killed in a shooting involving a Bureau of Land Management officer on Sunday, according to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office.

It happened around 2:45 p.m. in the desert near the Bookcliffs and 27 1/4 Road.

An initial investigation shows two officers were contacting a white van in the desert when the shooting happened, the sheriff's office said in a press release.

One BLM officer was shot, taken to the hospital as a precaution and is expected to be OK, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said one officer returned fire and the suspect was killed.

The suspect's identity will come from the Mesa County Coroner's Office once the family is notified.

The 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is looking for information about the white van and suspect. Anyone who saw or had contact with a white van in that area of the desert in the last few days is asked to call (970) 244-3526.
