Saturday, May 9, shortly after 9:00 a.m., a Colorado State Trooper responded to a report of a person acting oddly in the area Hwy 50 and 29 Road.

The 911 caller said the person was standing in the same position for a couple of hours, not moving. A citizen approached and asked the person if they needed help; the person did not answer or acknowledge their presence.

The Trooper attempted to speak with the man. The suspect reportedly began to act aggressively and displayed a 10-inch knife. Investigators say that is when the shooting happened.

The man died, however, the Trooper was not hurt.

The suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Jayson Thompson, from Bisbee, Arizona. According to the Mesa County Coroner, his cause of death is gunshot wounds of the torso. His death has been ruled a homicide. We're told toxicology reports are still pending.

Investigators are seeking the identities of several potential witnesses believed to be in the area during the time of the incident. There are photos of vehicles and people seen in the area of the Orchard Mesa Market gas station. For photos, please visit the
