School District 51 says they have decided to close all schools this Thursday and Friday because of the recent rise in illness across the Grand Valley.

D51 officials says they have never before had to close all of the schools in the district, but they are taking this unprecedented action because of how quickly the virus is spreading.

The D51 Nursing Coordinator put out the following statement: "We are taking this highly unusual action because this virus is extremely contagious and spreading quickly across our schools. In addition, it appears that there is now a second, related virus that is affecting students, some of whom have already been ill in recent weeks. The combination of the two has created an unprecedented spread of illness."

All schools will re-open as scheduled after Thanksgiving Break.

D51 officials say their custodial crew is working hard to disinfect schools and the closure will give them the time to perform an intense cleaning of school buildings.

The D51 Lunch Lizard will provide free meals to any student on Thursday and Friday at the following locations:

11:00 - 11:45 a.m. - Clifton Elementary Pavillion

11:00 - 11:45 a.m. - Dos Rios Elementary

12:00 - 12:45 p.m. - Rocky Mountain Elementary Main Entrance

12:00 - 12:45 p.m. Chipeta Elementary

Caprock Academy, a state-authorized charter school not apart of District 51, is scheduled to remain open.

If you are a parent at a private school in the area and you have not already heard whether or not your child's school will be open, you are recommended to call your child's school first thing in the morning to check.
