A sheriff's deputy has been shot while exchanging gunfire with a suspect.

It happened Wednesday night in Greeley in northern Colorado.

The Weld County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to a mobile home park for a disturbance involving a gun. When they got there, the suspect started shooting toward deputies, hitting one in the leg and abdomen.

Deputies were able to return fire and shot the suspect.

The deputy, who has not been named, was taken to the hospital and was in critical condition following surgery. He has been with the sheriff's office for 10 years.

No word on the suspect's identity or condition.
