GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) A father can be a mentor, role model and baseball coach in Jared Hanks' case.
"He's been there left and right to help me with whatever I needed help work on," said Jared.
Jared is talking about his father Chris, who is the head coach for CMU baseball. Hanks is a former pro catcher and JUCO World Series MVP.
Jared is just beginning his catching career as a sophomore at Grand Junction high school.
"I still remember the day when he said, 'dad will you buy me some catchers equipment?'" So I had to call the Louisville Slugger guys and find a small set that would fit a ten-year-old," said Chris.
Jared finished the season hitting .431 with 15 RBI's and a fielding percentage of .974.
"I think he receives and blocks the ball really nice," said Chris. "I've seen his arm get significantly stronger in the last year. I think it'll continue to get stronger."
Jared says he wants to play college ball just like his father.
"Playing for my dad will be cool," said Jared. "But at the same time. I want to start my own legacy. I don't want to live through my dads. I want to start somewhere else. I want to start somewhere new."
