GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) Three-hundred swimmer repreenting 16 teams gathered at CMU's El Pomar Natatorium for the Western Slope League Championships on Friday.
The meet showcases swimmers ages 5 to 20. Unlike the GJ Invite, this particular meet is solely for Western swimmers.
"Even though we might be small here that swimming still is a pretty big sport and that it is tough competition here," said Mallory Cawood of Maverick Aquatics. " It's not just a 'for fun' team."
It's also the last chance for the athletes to qualify for the Colorado State Long Course Swim Meets in Denver July 20-22 and July 27-29 in Colorado Springs.
For those who didn't qualify for state, it gives them final races before their school swim seasons.
"The really great thing about this is they will have entry times even as just a freshman going into high school," said meet director Mary Cornforth. "So they're really wanting to show their coaches what they can do as well as the returning high school students are getting some best times to start their season."
The swimming continues at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday and 9 A.M. on Sunday at El Pomar Natatorium.
