GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) Colorado Mesa athletes will start practices next week for their fall sports seasons, but the Maverick women's soccer program decided to put a fun event before the work begin.

On Saturday the team put on their version of the World Cup soccer tournament on campus. The Co-Ed event brought in six teams to play. To play you had to be at least 16 years of age.

The teams in the tournament had to pick a country in this years FIFA World Cup to represent and yes that even included wearing the countries colors.

This is the first year CMU has put on the event and they hope it continues to grow in the coming years.

"We have tried to get this up and running for the last couple of years and finally this year we were able to. It is a great day for everyone and that is really all we wanted to achieve. A fun environment for the Grand Junction soccer community to come out and play,"said CMU head coach Jason Clare.
