CMU Men's Soccer: New Mavs expected to contribute

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) CMU will have a lot of new faces this season. The team welcomes in 15 new players.

Eleven of them are freshman while four are transfers.

"Yes, there are new faces. But I think it's just a matter of bringing new players along and having them understand the way we do things here at Mesa," said head coach Todd Padgett. "The quicker you can get them up to speed, obviously, the better for everybody."

The Mavs will also have to deal with losing one of their biggest attacking threats. Last year's leading goal scorer Moshe Perez transferred to the University of Denver.

Therefore, the young guys will be expected to play big minutes.

"They see the level and they recognize what level they need to be at," said senior goalkeeper Briley Guarneri. "If they are struggling with something on the field, off the field even too, they know we're open. They understand we're a big family already."

CMU is ranked No. 21 in the preseason poll

The Mavs start their season at 2 P.M. on August 30 in New Mexico against West Texas A&M.
