HS Football: No. 6 Fruita to open against No. 9 Pueblo West

FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) The No. 6 Fruita Monument Wildcats will open up the season on Friday on the road against No. 9 Pueblo West.

"They're tough kids," said Fruita first-year head coach Cameron Ross. "Pueblo West is going to be good this year. They're fast on defense and pretty much kind of like us on offense, and like to run the ball a lot. It should be a great matchup week one."

The Wildcats are looking for redemption after being upset by No. 14 Vista Ridge in the first round of the playoffs last season.

"I think it's been more of a driving force," said Ross. "We didn't finish the season like we really wanted to and that's been one our core values going forward."

Fruita quarterback Zach Rush is one of the key returners for the Wildcats this season. He says Pueblo West will be a good early test

"I think it really sets up your season well," said Rush. "You get to see who you are right off the bat. Especially going down there, going to Pueblo, long trip, it's going to be warm obviously. It'll be a good way to see where we're at and where we have to go after that."

Kickoff is at 7 P.M. on Friday from Pueblo West.
