GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) South Dakota Mines punched CMU in the mouth out of the gate on Saturday afternoon leading 14-0 after the first quarter. The second half the Mavs woke up offensively outscoring the Hardrockers 29-16 to come away with the 36-33 win in the opener.
South Dakota Mines had one final chance in the game with four seconds to go, but Jake Sullivan saw his pass downfield picked off by Antonio Clark as timed expired to give CMU the win.
Eystin Salum led the Mavs offensively. Through the air he went 22-42 for 257 yards and a touchdown. On the ground the senior ran for 111 yards and a score.
With the win the Mavs improve to 1-0 on the year and next week will have their first road test of the season. They will travel to Portales, NM to take on Eastern New Mexico University. That game will kick off at 7:00 P.M. next Saturday night.
