GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) No. 14 Colorado Mesa climbed up five spots in the rankings despite squeaking by Western St. on Saturday.
The Mavs had four fumbles losing two of them. They also allowed a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
"You know those are mistakes that can't happen to be a winning team," said senior wide receiver Peter Anderson. "They're (Western) not a bad team. So you know with teams like that it's just one play that can change momentum for the whole game."
The Mavs began the game scoring 17 unanswered points but were outscored for the rest of the game, 20-7.
CMU's defense came to the rescue allowing just six second-half points.
"It is comforting to know that you make all the mistakes you possibly can and you're still 3-0 at the end of the day," said senior defensive lineman Chance Drake. "It's something to look forward to and we can only get better from here. That's what we plan to do."
The Mavs host Chadron St. at 1 P.M. on Saturday.
