GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) A rivalry will be renewed as the Southwest League will be on the line when Grand Junction wrestling will hit the mats at Central Wednesday night.
The Grand Junction rivals have been the top teams in the southwest for several years and the winner will have bragging rights and a conference title. According to the On the Mat rankings, Central is the fifth best team in 4A and Grand Junction is the third team in 5A.
With the state wrestling tournament just under a month away, the competition in this match will be fierce and help both teams evaluate what they need to tune up before making a run at a state title.
"We definitely want to beat them," said senior Tanner Hickey. "They are returning state champs so if we can go out and beat them, it really says something for our program as well. Usually, it's always a competitive dual. It really gets us ready because it's around the regional state tournament time. It usually gives us a big match before when we need it."
