GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) JR McDermott had elbow soreness and was shut down early last year. This year, he made a strong impression and good look at things to come this year in a short outing over the weekend.
In five innings, McDermott struck out nine and only allowed two base runners good enough to win RMAC Pitcher of the Week. While he's not back at full strength, he is looking promising on the mound at the start of the season.
"He didn't have his normal velocity yet, although it's good," said head coach Chris Hanks. "The command of his fastball and slider were the difference. It was nice to have JR back in that role and pitching. I thought he'd be good but I didn't think he'd be quite that sharp first time out so that was nice."
