GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) After going down with a knee injury last season, McKenzie Surface had a long road to recovery ahead of her. Fast forward 364 days and the senior threw her second career no-hitter in a win over Regis on Sunday.
Surface struck out 17 batters over the RMAC pod weekend at CMU softball field and was an obvious choice for RMAC Pitcher of the Week.
She's gotten the nod three times this season. Nine of the 17 strikeouts came in the five inning no-hitter leading to an 11-0 win and for Surface, it was an emotional moment for the senior as she feels she is back to being the shutdown pitcher she was.
"It's just super exciting," said Surface. "It's kind of been a whirlwind year. Yesterday was actually the year of date of when I actually tore my ACL against Regis. It was kind of fitting I thought with how everything came together with that. Sunday, playing them and accomplishing that and then a year yesterday is when it happened. I don't know, life is crazy."
