Athlete of the Week: Christian Koss

Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) Christian Koss couldn't believe he finally got the call he's been waiting for.

"Crazy, because you grow up thinking you're going to be a professional baseball player, that's what you aspire to be. getting the call and everything, it didn't set in for a couple days. Wow, it's happening. It's a great feeling, something you can't describe. it's a great group of guys, great coaching staff, great organization" says Christian Koss.

The 12th round pick made quite the impression. in his six games, koss is 11 for 20 with two home runs, 3 doubles and eight RBI's.

"When he showed up on his first day, I think he got four or five hits. and then he got caught into, I want to do a little bit more and maybe hit for some power. he's got a really good approach right now, staying in the middle of the field. he's hit a couple of opposite field home runs, but that is based on strength" says Manager, Jake Optiz

"Most of it is about being on time on everything. I feel like I've been doing that and it's allowed me to get off some pretty good swings" said Koss.

With a .422 batting average, his fielding holds just as high. Koss has the mobility to adapt anywhere in the infield. and having no errors to tally, he has found more time on the diamond.

"He's played a lot at shortstop, we've had him moved at third already, he's going to play second. really develop all three positions and be good and comfortable there" said Opitz.

"Something I was taught at a young age, that if you can be able to play other positions, it's going to give you a chance to play more. that's exactly what I've prided myself on doing. in fact, it keeps me in the lineup."

The California native is the second grand junction rocky to be named pioneer league player of the week. his offense and defense may be intact but one important element to staying in the lineup is to avoid any injuries.

"If you can prove you can stay healthy, longevity is the thing. I think to stay consistent throughout a season, stay at a good level."

When you do something you love, you don't work a day in your life. and it's safe to say, koss goes to the office with a smile on his face.

"Itching to get back to playing baseball played a part in it. I think the best part about it is you get to play baseball every day. when you get to that point in your life and it actually happens, it's definitely a good feeling."
