GJ Rockies: Mustangs make it interesting but Rockies hold on, 8-7

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) The Rockies survive a late scare by Billings in the ninth to win 8-7 on Tuesday night.

Mike Ruff looked untouchable during his four innings on the rubber. He allowed only one hit with six strikeouts. The defense behind him looked rock solid with a great throw from third by Christian Koss to get an out. In the fourth, GJ turned two on a grounder up the middle and cleared the Mustangs off the base pads.

Turner Brown led the scoring in the fourth with an RBI triple, his first RBI of the season. Just a few pitches later, he made it home on a wild pitch to make it 4-0, Rockies.

After giving up their first run in the sixth, Grand Junction responded with a Julio Carreras solo home run. Colin Simpson hit an RBI single and another wild pitch would score a run to make the score 8-1 after six innings.

Grand Junction seemed to have the game all wrapped up heading into the ninth but at Cash Case grand slam and a few runs gave the Mustangs life. Relief pitchers Ever Moya and Eric Hepple struggled to get three outs, but finally closed the door on a Billings comeback. GJ gets the win, 8-7.

The Rockies will play their final home game of the series and of the eight game home stand Wednesday against Billings at 6:40 P.M.
