Athlete of the Week: Abby Schaefer
While everyone was getting their learner's permit, Abby Schaefer was learning how to drive an ATV. This may be her first race at the Lands End Hill Climb but she's no stranger to the winds and rugged dirt road.
"I've always just grown up around racing. Going to Cortez and everything, so I was kind of thrown into it in a way. So when I turned 18, I was ready to race."
There were only a handful of women racing at Lands End. Abby says her experience so far has been a good one.
"It's honestly been really fun because they don't really expect a girl race car driver. When you take off your helmet and everything and they see that it's a woman, they're in shock. So I kind of like seeing the shock factor of it."
Off-road racing isn't your typical sport but the most important thing to remember and the lessons that come with it remain the same.
"For future races, just to have fun. That's the biggest part of it. Professionalism is all about showing good sportsmanship. I'm not really here to win, just here to show support and just have fun," says Abby.
