De Beque is on a 39 game win streak after a perfect 1A State Championship season last year. The Dragons continue to find a way to win.

"I think every team so far has really given it their best and I think that happened last year too,” Wesley Ryan said. “It's just that we expect it at this point."

This year’s team almost with a completely new roster but one constant is the growth of junior guard Wesley Ryan.

"We lost like six seniors and Brennan so the team is just all-around different honestly," Ryan said.

"The leadership and the things we've seen from our older guys, the ups and downs, has carried over to our boys. It's been really cool to see," head coach Jake Higuera said.

Ryan is averaging 22 points per game. He’s using his championship experience to help out his younger teammates.

"When he needs to speak up, we all listen because when he speaks, it's very important,” said Higuera. “Just his step up in leadership, taking the guys aside and helping each guy out and what they are supposed to do. That's the biggest thing we have seen is his leadership and his accountability to the team."

The junior eclipsed 1,000 points for his career this season, but he was a little late to the party on when he actually broke the 1,000 point threshold.

"Nobody knew and I found out three games later when I hit it,” Ryan said. “It was really special but still."

Ryan is shooting 70% from the field this season and he has lived up to his nickname.

"Wes, he's the dude,” said Higuera. “We call him dragon fire."

"It was early in the season last year,” Ryan said. “I just walked into the gym with a new pair of shoes on, just these bright red Paul George’s. He just looked at me and just yelled dragon fire and then it just stuck ever since."

"He comes every single day and is super humble and just always wanting to get better,” Higuera said. “When the ball is tipped up, the guy is ready to go. He's a gamer and we have the best seat in the house to watch him."
