Durango resident heading to Switzerland for ski mountaineering world championship

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The Cosmic Ski Mountaineering Series passed through Mesa County this afternoon on its 11 stop tour through Colorado and New Mexico.

Skiers had to tackle a nine mile course at Powderhorn - traversing up the mountain then across, and racing down for the win. Durango resident Scott Simmons took first place and will travel to Switzerland next week for the ski mountaineering world championships.

“It's kind of a relief actually because last year I was here and didn't have the greatest race so it felt good to get the victory today,” said Simmons. “Once we see the beautiful alps it’s going to be so exciting.”

Simmons started mountaineering twenty years ago and says being in the back country gives him a sense of freedom. Ski mountaineering combines ski touring, telemark, backcountry skiing, and mountaineering.
