Government shutdown already making local impact

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) One day into the government shutdown and there's still no sign of a compromise.

Some federal employees were impacted, allowed only to go into work on Tuesday to change their voicemails and drop off things like government-issued computers and cell phones.

And officials say many people will be stuck at home for the foreseeable future.

"It's a cooling off period, there's going to be a few days to this," says former Congressman, Scott McInnis. "Unfortunately, it does impact a lot of people but it is part of the budget process that they're in right now."

The last time the government shut down was seventeen years ago and lasted for a total of twenty-eight days between the end of 1995 and the beginning of 1996.

Entities like the Postal Service and Social Security have their own funding streams and will keep doing business as usual.
